TROUBLESHOOTING

Why did polyurethane turn cloudy?

Cloudiness can involve trapped moisture, application conditions or the interaction between coats.

Start with the label: Identify the exact product and do not assume another formula’s remedy applies.

What to check

  1. Check whether humidity or surface moisture was outside the product instructions.
  2. Confirm the previous coat was within its recoat window.
  3. Distinguish temporary haze during drying from a defect that remains after cure.
  4. Use the manufacturer’s repair instructions before sanding or adding another coat.

Before attempting a repair

Record the application time, approximate temperature, humidity, layer thickness and surface. Compare those facts with the current manufacturer instructions. If the material affects structural strength, electrical safety, pressure containment, food contact or immersion, contact the manufacturer before placing it into service.
